Landscape Transformation Classes & Rebate

The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) will offer a rebate of $1 per square foot of turf removed from residential and commercial landscapes. West Basin Municipal Water District will be partnering with MWD to offer homeowners a free class designed to help transform your lawn into a more water-efficient landscape. West Basin will be hosting 5 separate classes throughout local cities beginning in August 2018, which will teach residents how to incorporate sustainable landscape design elements, alongside California Friendly plants, to assist residents with navigating the turf removal process for their landscapes.

During the class, residents will learn how to:

  • Remove existing grass
  • Plan a sustainable garden design
  • Prepare a healthy soil for plants
  • Incorporate a water-efficient irrigation system
  • Plant climate-appropriate plants
  • Maintain a new, drought-tolerant landscape

REBATE PROGRAM

The Landscape Transformation program is a two-part application process. In order to receive a rebate, you must apply to reserve rebate funds prior to starting your project. After the reservation, you will have 180 days to complete the project and submit your request for a rebate. Metropolitan Water District is offering $1 per square foot of grass that you replace with more water-efficient native plants, irrigation systems and sustainable features, up to $1500 for residents and $10,000 for businesses.

HOW TO APPLY

Apply for Your Landscape Transformation Rebate in Two Parts

Part 1: Project Start Approval

  • Before you begin your project or remove any turf, you must apply for and receive a reservation.
  • The reservation will specify the estimated rebate amount based on the measured area and information provided. Note: It is important that you measure your project area(s) accurately. Once your project start has been approved, your rebate amount cannot be increased from the amount reserved.
  • Visit the SoCal Water$mart Landscape Transformation Application to apply for your project start approval online.
  • Items to have ready before applying:
  • At least 5 color photos of the areas where you plan to remove turf.  Read the Landscape Transformation Program FAQ Page, “What are the Photo Guidelines for Landscape Transformation”, to see what types of photos are required.
  • A simple landscape plan
  • A photo or scanned copy of your recent water bill.
  • Set up an account with a valid email address and password. This email address will be used to provide information regarding your rebate status. The account will allow you to log back in after your project is complete to claim your reserved funding (see part 2 details below).
  • Do not begin your work until you receive an email approval to start your project. This may take approximately two weeks.
  • Once you receive approval, you have 180 days to complete your project.
  • After completing your project, you are ready to request your rebate.

Part 2: Rebate Application

  • When your project is complete, visit the Landscape Transformation Application to request your rebate by completing “Step 2: Rebate Application”
  • The project start approval will specify the estimated rebate amount based on the footage and information provided. Note: It is important that you measure your project area(s) accurately. The square footage listed on the application cannot be increased from the amount reserved.
  • Visit the SoCal Water$mart Landscape Transformation Application to apply for your project start approval online.
  • Login as a “Returning Applicant” using your original email and password.
  • Submit a minimum of eight (8) color photos of your completed project area, showing:
  • The required plant coverage
  • The sustainable landscape approach selected (i.e. rain garden, rain barrel, etc.)
  • Each area where turf was transformed
  • The overhead irrigation system
  • Please note: it may take up to two (2) weeks to review your rebate application. Once all the necessary documentation has been approved, an inspection of the site may be required.
